Believing in God’s Protection: The Key to Walking in It

One of the biggest struggles for many believers is understanding and truly walking in the protection that God has already provided. We often bring God down to the level of our experience instead of rising to the level of His Word. We reason things out with our own understanding, leaning on what we see rather than on His promises. But Scripture is clear:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
– Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

When it comes to spiritual warfare, many Christians live as if they are completely vulnerable—constantly under attack with no defense. But that is not the truth of God’s Word. He has given us spiritual immunity—a way to stand firm and remain protected against the enemy’s attacks.

Let’s look at Ephesians 6:13-17 (NIV):

“Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

We are going to focus on verse 16:

“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”

Spiritual Immunity: More Than Just Protection—It’s a Lifestyle

We live in a world filled with physical threats—viruses, bacteria, diseases. Yet, our bodies were designed with an immune system that fights off these threats every single day. We don’t wake up every morning afraid of getting sick. We trust that our immune system is working, and we only notice when it fails.

The same principle applies spiritually. Just because attacks come doesn’t mean we have to be overcome by them. The shield of faith is like our spiritual immune system—it blocks and neutralizes the enemy’s attacks before they can take hold.

Yet, many Christians live as if they have no immunity at all. They talk about spiritual attacks as if they are completely defenseless—accepting defeat as if it’s normal. But just like we don’t accept sickness as our everyday state, we shouldn’t accept spiritual defeat either.

“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”
– Isaiah 54:17 (NIV)

If God says no weapon formed against us will prosper, why do we live as if we are always under attack, always suffering, always vulnerable? The issue is not the existence of attacks—it’s how we respond to them.

Why Many Christians Don’t Walk in Their Immunity

  1. They Believe Experience Over the Word of God
Too many people build their theology based on what they have personally experienced instead of what God’s Word says. For example, some believe that because not everyone they pray for is healed, then it must not be God’s will to heal. But this is a dangerous way to live because our experiences fluctuate—God’s Word does not.
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
    – Matthew 24:35 (NIV)
If we allow our experiences to shape our beliefs rather than allowing God’s Word to shape them, we will always be tossed around by doubt.
  2. They Speak Death Instead of Life
Many Christians reinforce their own bondage with their words. They constantly talk about how hard life is, how the devil is attacking them, how they can never seem to get ahead. But what does Proverbs 18:21 say?
“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
If we keep confessing defeat, we will live in defeat. But when we start confessing victory—even before we see it—we align ourselves with the truth of God’s Word and walk in His power.
  3. They Accept Defeat as Normal
If the world functioned on the idea that sickness is just “normal” and inevitable, society would collapse. Businesses would shorten their workdays, hospitals would have no room, and everything would be in chaos.
Yet, when it comes to spiritual warfare, many Christians accept constant struggle and oppression as “normal.” This is not biblical. Yes, we face battles, but we fight from a place of victory, not defeat.
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
    – 1 Corinthians 15:57 (NIV)

Walking in Spiritual Immunity

So how do we actually walk in the protection God has given us?

  1. Renew Your Mind with the Word
Stop letting experiences dictate your theology. Instead, meditate on what God’s Word actually says about your protection.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
    – Romans 12:2 (NIV)
  2. Guard Your Words
Speak only what aligns with God’s promises. Stop confessing what you see in the natural if it contradicts God’s Word.
“Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’”
    – Joel 3:10 (NIV)
  3. Use the Shield of Faith
Faith is not just belief—it’s action. If God’s Word says “nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19), then walk as if that is the truth, because it is.
  4. Reject Every Lie That Contradicts God’s Word
The enemy will always try to make you believe that you are powerless, vulnerable, and without help. Reject that.Every time a thought arises that contradicts what God has promised, cast it down.
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
    – 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

Final Thoughts

You have already been given spiritual immunity—but if you don’t believe it, speak it, and walk in it, you won’t experience it. Stop bringing God down to your experience—instead, align your experience with His Word.

Stand firm in faith. Take up your shield. Walk in victory.

“Behold, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
– Luke 10:19 (NIV)

Now it’s time to start living like it. 🚀
