What Do You See? (The 12 Spies & the Power of Focus)

Scripture:

“We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
—Numbers 13:33 (NIV)

Devotional

Twelve spies saw the same land.
Same giants.
Same cities.
Same promise.

But they didn’t see the same thing.

Why? Focus.

The ten spies fixated on the giants. Joshua and Caleb focused on God’s promise. It wasn’t the circumstances that shaped their report—it was their perception.

Here’s the science behind it: your brain has a built-in filter called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Its job is to sort through the millions of pieces of information you encounter daily and highlight what you deem important. That’s why when you’re thinking about buying a red car, suddenly you see red cars everywhere.

Spiritually, the same principle applies. If you focus on fear, you’ll see obstacles everywhere. But if you focus on faith, you’ll start noticing God’s hand in places you never saw before. Your mindset shapes your sight.

Joshua and Caleb’s RAS wasn’t tuned to the giants—it was locked onto the promise: “The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them” (Numbers 14:9).

Reflection

  • What “giants” are dominating your thoughts right now?
  • Are you focusing more on obstacles or opportunities?
  • How can you adjust your mindset to see through the lens of faith?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to see through eyes of faith, not fear. Redirect my focus from what overwhelms me to the truth of Your promises. Amen.

Memory Verse:

“Fix your eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
